Thomas, a local Erie, PA, contractor just purchased a brand-new 2019 Ford F-550 work truck. He called Doug Reichert, our integration specialist, and scheduled having us install a heavy-duty electrical power connection for his construction trailers. Thomas uses the heavy-duty Ford F-550 to haul major equipment to and from the job sites.
These trailers have powerful winches for loading items on and off the trailers. The trailer comes with a standard seven-pin trailer connector, but due to the size and weight of the equipment being loaded on and off the trailers with the winches, it needs more power.
Thomas wanted to have hi-amp power from the truck to the winch with a flip of a switch. We tasked MECP-certified technician Art Dougan with the installation. He started with placing the heavy-duty Waytek connector near the existing seven-pin connector. Following the factory wiring harnesses that already existed, Art ran the positive and negative heavy-duty wire from the rear of the truck to the batteries under the hood. He was sure to cover the heavy-duty power wiring with plastic loom for protection.
After running the wiring, Art then installed a large 200 amp relay that will allow the operator to send power to the rear connector when needed. To use the truck to power the trailers, Thomas simply flips the AUX 1 button on the factory-installed upfitter switches in the overhead console.
As an added safety feature, Thomas can also disable the rear electrical power by pushing the red button on the 150 amp circuit breaker that was installed under the hood. This circuit breaker protects the high-power circuit from overload.
