Jackie was having an issue with her 2013 Chevy Malibu. Her gauge cluster would only work when it wanted to! In fact, the issue got worse and worse as the instrument cluster worked less and less. In further detail, the vehicle would start and drive, but Jackie had no instrument lighting, no speedometer, no gauges, and could not even tell how much gas she had in the vehicle.
Jackie took the vehicle to her local mechanic. Then, the mechanic recommended her to ENORMIS Mobile Specialties. We actually hear that alot, “take it to ENORMIS”! So, Jackie first called the store and spoke with our Integration Specialist Doug Reichert about her issue. Doug knew we could do a Chevy cluster repair for Jackie. So, Doug scheduled Jackie to drop the vehicle at our store the next day.
Chevy Cluster Repair is Diagnosed by an MECP Technician
MECP certified technician Ken Whiteman was tasked with the diagnostic on the 2013 Chevy Malibu. Ken noted that the vehicle had a check engine light on. So, he first used our GM factory diagnostic tool and scanned for trouble codes. Because of that, Ken had 4 different codes for lost communication with the Instrument Panel. From there, Ken proceeded to remove the instrument and check the wiring for the Instrument Panel. The wiring for the instrument panel checked ok. At that point Ken knew he had an internal fault of the instrument panel. So, Ken dis-assembled the instrument cluster and found the issue.
Mike Macaluso, our Operations Manager repaired the issue with the cluster and then tested the instrument cluster for proper operation. ENORMIS was able to repair the instrument cluster and return the vehicle back to Jackie the same day.
In House Repair Saves Time and Money
By the way, Doug checked into a replacement cluster, in case we were not able to repair it. A replacement cluster for the vehicle with the required programming would have been around $600.00. We fixed it for about half of that amount. Doug called both Chevy/GM parts and the 3rd parties that rebuild them for Chevy dealers. Guess what? The Malibu dash clusters are on a 6 month back order! So, it appears as though all 2012, 2013, 2014, 2014 Chevy Malibu’s have a problematic cluster.
