Have you had your hands full and wished you could open your rear hatch remotely? Dave, a West Erie client, called the store looking to add a power hatch to his wife’s 2016 Jeep Cherokee. This 2016 Jeep Cherokee was loaded with heated seats, heated steering wheel, remote start, etc., but it lacked the one feature that his wife really wanted: a power open and close rear liftgate/hatch.
Doug Reichert at ENORMIS knew a power liftgate kit was available that would make it look and operate just as if Jeep installed it at the factory. This specialty kit interfaces with the vehicle’s “CAN-BUS” communication system. It allows the Jeep’s driver to open/close the rear hatch using:
- Existing exterior rear liftgate release handle
- Factory Jeep key fobs (by pressing unlock 3 times)
- Button under the dash
- Button on the rear hatch
ENORMIS technician Ken first removed the old hydraulic liftgate struts and installed the new heavy-duty, electric power liftgate struts. Now just the wiring and control module remained. Ken had to run the new control module wiring through the rear liftgate to the front of the vehicle, following the vehicle’s existing wiring harnesses.
After the wiring was completed, Ken installed the buttons in the front and rear and programmed the liftgate to the vehicle’s CAN-BUS system. ENORMIS programmed the correct clearance height for the liftgate and tested the system extensively.
We returned the Jeep Cherokee to the client later that day. Dave and his wife were impressed with the quality of installation and the ease of use using the new power liftgate.
