The local Erie YMCA contacted us to increase the safety of their buses by adding reverse cameras to their fleet. The bus drivers did not like trying to back up the nearly 40-foot-long buses. The rear backup camera provides an added measure of safety and visibility of any children or objects that may be behind the bus. The combination of limited visibility and the need to maneuver around students, pedestrians and other vehicles has the potential for disaster.
Doug Reichert, our integration specialist, was happy to help the YMCA with this upgrade. Doug asked the YMCA’s director of transportation, Ray, to bring one of the buses out to our store for an initial inspection to see what we would be working with. Ray wanted to add the same backup camera system that came on a newer bus he had. Ray and Doug coordinated the inspection and got a game plan together.
Doug located all the parts that would be needed and came up with estimates for the bus with installed pricing. The mirror system consists of a 6″ X 30″ replacement rearview mirror with a built-in large monitor to display the rear camera image.
The rear cameras are IP67 water-resistant, color and with night vision, and provide a 150 degree field of view. MECP-certified technician Arthur Dougan was assigned to handle this installation and was able to complete the job promptly so the buses could go back in service quickly.
