Need to add a brake controller and 7-pin connector to your SUV? Darin, a west Erie resident, recently purchased a 2016 Ford Escape and called ENORMIS about being able to tow his small camping trailer. He wanted a brake controller for use with his 1,700 lb pop-up camper, which had a round 7-pin connector.
Darin spoke with Doug Reichert, our integration specialist, who asked if the Ford Escape had a flat 4-pin or round 7-pin wiring connector. For the brake controller to work, the vehicle would need a round 7-pin connector. Darin said that the vehicle came with a flat 4-pin only. Ford does not make a round 7-pin connector or wiring for the Escape models, nor does Ford make a brake controller for the Escape model. However, Doug did a little research and said, “ENORMIS can do it!”
Doug and Darin decided on a day for installation. Since ENORMIS stocked most of the parts, we were able to do the install the same week that Darin called. We tasked MECP-certified technician Ken Whiteman with this install, and he created a custom wiring harness for the combination flat 4-pin and round 7-pin trailer connector. This custom harness interfaces directly with the Ford factory trailer module. When the trailer is connected to the 4-pin or 7-pin connector, the Ford blind-spot sensors are disabled and the driver is alerted on the Escape’s instrument panel.
After we created and mounted the harness, Ken ran the custom harnessing to a Tekonsha Brake controller, which — per Darin’s request — we mounted discreetly and hid in the glove box.
We hope Darin enjoys his summer weekends camping with ENORMIS’s custom trailer wiring.
