A client from North East recently called ENORMIS from their local Ford dealership to find out if we could install a custom 2018 Ford Expedition video system. The client has four children who range in age from four to 15, so appropriate entertainment was very important to them. Our Operations Manager Mike and Service Advisor Doug Reichert knew that we’d be able to provide them with a solution that would keep the kids’ attention while on a drive. Shortly after taking delivery of the Expedition, the client dropped it off at our store to begin the project.
Advent Video Headrest System
We designed the Expedition video system around a quartet of Advent 8-inch 8ZZ01 custom headrest monitors. Each unit comes to us finished in color-matched vinyl with the same grain as the seats. In the case of this Explorer, the stitching isn’t visible on the headrests, but in applications where it is, Advent can use the same thread color as on the seats.
A principal feature of these headrests is their compliance with all Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Your headrests are an important safety item and need to remain in position in the event of an accident.
Ford Expedition Video System Installation
We assigned the task of installing this video system to Art Dougan and Ken Whiteman. The system would be a little more complex than most. Our typical headrest installation uses one pair of monitors, so the wiring is relatively simple. In this Explorer, we needed to configure the system so that the third-row monitors could show a video feed from the front or adjacent units. After working out a wiring plan that would let anyone watch a single video source, the guys began the installation.
The physical mounting of the headrest monitors for the third-row seats was fairly simple, but running the wiring wasn’t. The second-row seats not only slide forward and backward, but they also flip up to allow entry to the third-row seats. Ken and Art ran the wiring for the monitors along the same path as the factory-installed wiring and tested everything to make sure it functioned smoothly and reliably.
Android-Based Entertainment
The Advent 8ZZ01 headrests feature 8-inch touchscreens with a resolution of 800×480 pixels. Each unit has a DVD/CD mechanism and can also play video from an SD card, USB memory stick or an HDMI input. The Android-based screens are fully functional tablet computers with Wi-Fi, so users can connect to a hot-spot to stream entertainment or download apps or games. Each headrest comes with a set of wireless headphones so the kids can listen to their programming without distracting mom and dad.
