A local fiber optic service provider recently contacted ENORMIS Mobile Specialties to inquire about adding a backup camera safety system to their 2015 Ram ProMaster cargo van. We have worked with this client before, so we had a good feel for the level of integration they wanted. Doug Reichert discussed the proposed camera system with the client and found out that the van had an electrical issue that was preventing the clearance lights on the roof from functioning reliably. We let them know that we’d be happy to check that system while installing the camera.
Ram ProMaster Backup Camera System Integration
Ken Whiteman, one of our MECP-certified automotive electronics technicians, was assigned the task of upgrading this vehicle. He installed a backup camera that replaces the upper brake light on the back of the van. This factory-fit camera provides an impressive 580 lines of resolution for a razor-sharp image, and the 170-degree viewing angle ensures that the operator will be able to see everything behind the vehicle. The camera also offers excellent low-light sensitivity to make it easy to see when parking at night. Finally, the entire assembly is waterproof, so we know it will last for decades.
Ken fitted a new rear-view mirror that features a 3.5-inch color display to the vehicle. As soon as the transmission selector is put in the reverse, the camera image is displayed automatically for the driver.
Clearance Light Repairs
With the camera safety system in place, Ken turned his attention to the clearance light issue. After removing the headlight, he quickly realized that the original lights were allowing water to enter the vehicle and damage the wiring. The leak was so bad that there was water in the cup holders, damage to the wiring for the side curtain airbag and even some mold around the shifter mechanism in the center console.
We ordered brand-new lighting assemblies, and Ken installed them with new sealant. He then repaired all the damaged wiring and secured everything in place to ensure there would be no rattles or buzzes while driving down the road. He finished the installation by performing a leak test of the new lights to ensure the cabin would stay dry.
